Alan Hu Foundation is proud to announce it has been selected as a 2025 California Nonprofit of the Year by 16th California District Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan. Alan Hu Foundation is one of more than one hundred nonprofits that will be honored by their state senators and assemblymembers for their outstanding contributions to the communities they serve. Alan Hu Foundation was created by Xiaofang Chen and Chih-Ching Hu in memory of their son, Alan. He passed away due to mental disorders in 2018 at the age of 15. Their mission is to promote mental health, raise awareness and remove stigma surrounding psychiatric disorders, and to support fundamental research for cures. The Alan Hu Foundation Mental Health Lecture Series of webinars featuring experts from leading universities, hospitals and research centers is free to the public through the generosity of individual donors and grants from Three Valleys Community Foundation, City of Pleasanton Youth Grant, and Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund, and includes simultaneous Chinese interpretation generously provided by Mental Health Associations for Chinese Communities, a 2019 California Nonprofit of the Year. In addition, Alan Hu Foundation Scholarships up to $1,000.00 have been awarded to 57 seniors in Pleasanton, Dublin and Livermore School Districts who will pursue college majors and career training in mental health fields. Alan Hu Foundation has presented three concerts featuring local, national, and international performers to benefit the Alan Hu Foundation Scholarship Fund. Xiaofang Chen, President and Co-Founder said, “Alan Hu Foundation’s vision is to provide a community safety net through education in early detection and treatment of psychiatric disorders, information about evidence-based treatments and resources, and suicide prevention. According to “Causes Count,” a 2019 report commissioned by CalNonprofits, the nonprofit sector is the 4th largest industry in the state, employing more than 1.2 million people. Each year, California nonprofits generate more than $273 billion in revenue and bring in $40 billion in revenue from outside of California. The unpaid labor contributed by volunteers at nonprofits is equivalent to 330,000 full-time jobs every year. Now in its tenth year, the California Nonprofit of the Year initiative provides the opportunity for each California state legislator to recognize a nonprofit organization doing outstanding work in their district. The program culminates with a celebratory luncheon at the Capitol on California Nonprofits Day, which this year is May 21. The program is sponsored by the CalNonprofits in partnership with the state Senate and Assembly Select Committees on the Nonprofit Sector.
